The Knox Leader has criticised the Knox Council’s distribution of Knox News, what has been labelled as council “promotion” “masquerading” as a newspaper.
The council’s decision to publish a “news” paper is concerning. It is difficult for the paper to adhere to journalism’s underlying philosophies of fairness, accuracy and balance as it’s main aim is to promote the council’s achievements and involvements within the community and present it in a positive light.
The council newspaper does not play the role of the Fourth Estate, as instead of scrutinising and holding powers of authority accountable, it promotes it.
I believe it is important for readers to acknowledge the paper is not journalism, but promotion when reading.
